Waterfalls of Glen Burney
Last Sunday, despite the gloomy weather forecast of 50% chance of rain all day, we decided to head out and hike the Glen Burney Trail along a small stream near Blowing Rock, NC. Its a great little 3 mile hike that visits several different falls along the way. I decided to get my feet wet, literally, to get some of these shots of the falls from various angles.

Beautiful shots of the moving water. How long were the exposure times that you were shooting?

Thanks Mike! Most of these shots were taken using ISO 100, f/18 and shutter speed of 1.3 sec. I also used a circular polarizer to reduce the glare on the rocks and bring out the deeper colors in the leaves. I was pretty much going for the longest shutter speed I could manage without overexposing (hence the reason for the very small aperture) in order to get the blur in the moving water.

The results were truly amazing. I thought you might have been using a neutral density filter. Were you using a tripod or monopod? (I figure at 1.3 sec you were not hand holding).

I was told that a neutral density filter is useful for shots like this, but I don’t own a ND filter. Might have to get one to experiment. I really like the effects of the polarizer, but it might even be possible to stack the two filters. And yes I was using a tripod.

You have no idea how refreshing and cool these photos are to someone stuck in a stuffy room on a computer with very hot and muggy weather for months. My sincere appreciation for this post!
